“I choose music because I love it, and I am going to use music to help those who are unprivileged.” This was Jenny Huang’s response to her college essays when she was 18 years old. In the small town in China where she grew up, music was a luxury.
For years when Jenny was young, her parents drove 6 hours (round trip) for her piano lessons every week. Jenny Huang witnessed as her parents earned just enough to support the family; they sacrificed so much for her music education. And because of that, it had always been Jenny’s dream to use music to help people in need.
Jenny Huang is passionate about engaging arts and music in the community and combining music with charity. After years of researching and being involved with nonprofit organizations such as the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra (NOYO), and Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition, She co-founded Concerts for Good, a social enterprise that helps nonprofits raise funds through music programming and performances.
In April 2018, Concerts for Good produced its prototype charity concert, "Living in The Harmony: A Benefit Concert for the Homeless," and raised over $3000 for Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless (NEOCH) by presenting eleven musicians from Oberlin Conservatory. During Jenny Huang's leadership at Concerts for Good, she developed business partnerships with The Whole Food, Trader Joe's, the Hotel at Oberlin, etc, in addition to raising funds and awareness for charities, and provided professional musicians' performance opportunities.
In 2018, Jenny Huang received a full scholarship to participate in the LaunchU Business Program, a 12-day, 12-hour-a-day business Bootcamp, and two rounds of the pitch competition. She presented Concert for Good as one of the ten finalists for the LaunchU Competition to compete for the $45,000 cash reward.
The same year, Concerts for Good was featured on the Oberlin Conservatory Magazine 2018 Annual Issue, and an in-depth interview “Doing Concerts for Good” by Oberlin College & Conservatory of Music.
